Base Building in Space Survival Games: Structure, Air, Power and Defence, Piece by Piece
A base in space survival has to hold up, hold air and stay powered. Four placement systems, why structural integrity turns a base into a puzzle, what changes when you build on a sphere, and where COLONIZED stands.

In short
- A space survival base has to do three jobs a surface base does not: hold up under its own weight, hold air, and stay powered. The best systems make those constraints the fun.
- Four placement systems dominate: free placement, snap grids, voxels and blueprints. Structural integrity is what turns any of them into a puzzle.
- COLONIZED builds bases piece by piece with structural integrity: pull a support and whatever is left hanging comes down. Colonies let groups share beds and respawn. Resource gathering is in development.
Base building in space survival games is a design problem with extra constraints. A base on a planet has to hold up. A base in vacuum has to hold air. A base anywhere has to be powered. The best systems make those constraints the fun, so a base is a decision and not a decoration. This page covers the four placement systems, why structural integrity matters, what changes when you build on a sphere and how to defend a base, and says where COLONIZED, a space survival MMORPG for PC with a closed alpha first waves planned for winter 2026-2027, stands.
Four placement systems
| System | How it works | Strength | Weakness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free placement | Put pieces anywhere | Total freedom | Pieces float; bases look the same |
| Snap grid | Pieces connect at set points | Tidy and predictable | Feels rigid |
| Voxels | The world is blocks you add or remove | Digging and shaping | Heavy to store and send |
| Blueprints | Pick a premade module | Quick to build | Little to decide |
Many games combine two. The question that matters is not which, but what rules sit on top.
Structural integrity: why it matters
A rule that structures need support is cheap to describe and powerful to play. It does three things:
- It makes design matter. A wide room needs pillars; a tall tower needs a base.
- It makes attack mean something. Removing the right piece can bring down a wall.
- It makes mistakes visible. A base that looks fine but is badly supported collapses, and you learn why.
A game without it lets you build a floating palace. With it, a base is a puzzle of load and support, and the best bases look like they were designed by someone who understood the problem.
The three jobs of a space base
| Job | The question | What good looks like |
|---|---|---|
| Hold up | What stops it falling? | Supports, foundations and visible stress |
| Hold air | Which rooms are sealed? | A clear difference between a sealed room and an open one |
| Stay powered | Where does energy come from? | Generation, storage and use that you plan |
Plenty of games do the first well and skip the other two. A space survival game that skips air is a survival game with a ship in it. We compare the two in best space survival games.
Building on a sphere
On a flat map, “up” is the same everywhere. On a spherical planet, up points away from the centre, and it changes as you move. Two bases on opposite sides of the world have different “up” directions. A building system for a sphere has to align pieces to the local surface, not to a global axis. It also changes how foundations are placed and how gravity acts on a structure. That is one of the reasons worlds with radial gravity are harder to build for than flat ones.
Groups, shared bases and defence
A base is more than a shelter when a group shares it. Shared storage, shared beds and shared respawn points make it a home. Defence then depends on the conflict model of the game, which is its own decision; see co-op, PvE and PvP in survival games for the options. A good question to ask any game is what happens to a base when no one is online.
Planning a first base: a checklist
Whatever the game, the same questions help you place a first base well:
- Is it near what you need? Water, materials and a safe route home.
- Is the ground stable? Foundations on a slope are a structural problem.
- What holds it up? Place supports before you place the roof.
- Is there one sealed room? If air matters, make one room that is truly closed.
- Where does power come from? Plan generation and storage together.
- Can you add on? Leave space and supports for a second module.
- What happens if you lose it? Keep a spare set of tools and supplies elsewhere.
A small base that works beats a large one that does not. Start with seven pieces and a plan, not seventy and a hope.
What COLONIZED has built
In the development build:
- Bases built piece by piece. Pull a support and whatever is left hanging comes down.
- Colonies. Player clans that invite other players and share beds and respawn points in them.
- Persistence. Dedicated servers save your character, inventory, builds and colony on the server.
- Survival around the base. Five needs, the vacuum outside the atmosphere and ninety crafting recipes, made by hand, at the workbench, the fabricator and the furnace.
- Worlds with radial gravity. Spherical worlds you walk from the ground to orbit.
In development: resource gathering and the deposit system, which is meant to feed building; ship flight, landing and multi-crew; and a player economy. Not announced: how bases are protected when their owners are offline, and whether players will fight each other. For how a group lives around a base, see co-op in a space survival MMO. Ships also have interiors you can walk through; the next layer of that is in moving ship interiors.
In short: the best base-building systems give you limits to design against, whether structure, air or power, and then let you share the result with other people. The limits are what make a base yours.

Questions and answers
How does base building work in space survival games?
Players place pieces such as floors, walls and supports to make shelters. Better systems add rules: structures need support, rooms must be sealed to hold air and equipment needs power. Those rules make the base a puzzle rather than a decoration.
What is structural integrity in a survival game?
A rule that structures must be supported. If you remove a support, whatever depended on it falls. It makes design matter, since a base that looks right but is badly supported can collapse.
Can you build bases in COLONIZED?
Yes, in the development build: bases are built piece by piece, and pulling a support makes whatever is left hanging come down. Colonies, which are player clans, can share beds and respawn points. COLONIZED is not playable yet; the first closed alpha wave is planned for winter 2026-2027.
Are bases protected when you are offline in COLONIZED?
Not announced. Whether players will fight each other, and the rules that would apply to bases, have not been announced.
