Space Survival vs Space Sim: Two Genres That Share a Sky, and Which One You Want
Space sims are about the ship. Space survival games are about you. They share a sky and part of their audience, but they ask different things of you. A side-by-side comparison, a quiz, and where COLONIZED sits.

In short
- A space sim is about piloting: the ship, its physics and its systems. A space survival game is about staying alive: needs, gathering, crafting and building.
- The two overlap where a ship is also a home, and where planets have ground to walk on.
- COLONIZED is a space survival MMORPG with a realistic space simulation as one of its pillars; survival, building and combat are in the development build, while ship flight, landing and multi-crew are in development.
Space sims are about the ship. Space survival games are about you. That is the shortest honest answer to the difference. They share a sky and some of their audience, but they ask different things of you, reward different habits and fail in different ways. This page compares them side by side, offers a five-question quiz and says where COLONIZED, a space survival MMORPG for PC with a closed alpha first waves planned for winter 2026-2027, sits. For the pure simulator side, what a space sim is is the definition page.
Side by side
| Dimension | Space sim | Space survival |
|---|---|---|
| Core verb | Pilot | Survive |
| Centre of the game | The ship and its systems | The character and their needs |
| What you master | A flight model, a cockpit, navigation | Gathering, crafting, building, managing risk |
| What failure costs | A ship, a cargo, a bounty | Your stock, your base, your progress |
| A typical session | A route, a fight, a delivery | A base, an expedition, a repair |
| Controls | Often a stick or controller | Usually keyboard and mouse |
| Pace | Long stretches of travel and flight | Cycles of needs, tasks and danger |
| Your home | The cockpit or a station | A base you built |
| Planets | Often a destination or a backdrop | Places you walk on, with weather and resources |
Neither is a lesser version of the other. A sim that tried to be survival would lose its flight depth; a survival game that tried to be a sim would lose its pressure.
Where they overlap
Three places:
- The ship as a home. If a ship has beds, storage and a place to work, flying it is also a way of living.
- Planets you can stand on. A planet with a ground adds gravity, weather and resources, which are survival problems.
- Logistics. Moving what you gathered from one world to another is where flying and surviving meet.
These overlaps are why many players like both. They are also why it is useful to ask any game which one comes first.
A five-question quiz
- Do you feel more satisfaction from landing a ship cleanly or from finishing a base? (Ship: sim. Base: survival.)
- Do you prefer a joystick or a keyboard and mouse? (Joystick: sim. Keyboard: survival.)
- Do you want your downtime to be travel or tasks? (Travel: sim. Tasks: survival.)
- Is losing a ship worse than losing a base? (Ship: sim. Base: survival.)
- Do you want to play with a group that builds together? (Yes: survival, and probably an MMO.)
Four or more on one side means that side. A split result suggests a hybrid, which is where the two genres meet.
What a hybrid owes you
A game that mixes the two has to be honest about how. Two things to look for:
- A statement about what comes first. Is the flight model the product, or is the world?
- Both halves in the build. If the survival half is real and the flying half is “in development,” say so. The state of each half is what you can check.
What an evening looks like in each
A space sim evening. You pick a route and plan your departure. You check the ship’s systems, line up the approach, and spend the next hour on the quiet work of flying: a burn, a correction, a docking. What you remember is how cleanly you did it.
A space survival evening. You check your needs, then your supplies. You gather what a repair needs, craft the part, fix the weak point in your base and make a short trip for the thing you were missing. What you remember is what you made and what almost went wrong.
Both are satisfying, and they satisfy different people. The hybrid evening mixes them: the trip for materials is a flight, and the flight has a reason because your base needs something. That reason is what a hybrid game gives you that a pure sim or a pure survival game does not.
Where COLONIZED sits
COLONIZED puts survival first and keeps a realistic space simulation as one of its pillars. In the development build, survival is the part you can see: five needs, the vacuum outside the atmosphere, ninety crafting recipes, bases built piece by piece, and spherical worlds with gravity that points to their centre. Ship flight, landing and multi-crew are in development. The flight model, joystick support and other controls have not been announced. If you came here for a simulator, the space sim guide tells you what to look for in one. If you came for survival, the space survival guide does the same.
We also have a page about what makes space games where you can walk inside your ship different, which is the bridge between the two genres.
What to do next
Applications for the closed alpha are open, taking part is free per the alpha terms, and every friend who completes an application moves you ten places up the list.
If you cannot decide
Try both in the cheapest way available: watch an unedited session of each type, then ask yourself what you were doing at minute thirty. If you were still piloting, lean towards a sim. If you were gathering, building or repairing, lean towards survival. If you were doing both, a hybrid is the right kind of game for you, and the question to ask any hybrid is which half is already in the build.

Questions and answers
What is the difference between a space sim and a space survival game?
A space sim centres on piloting, the physics of flight and ship systems. A space survival game centres on the player's needs, gathering, crafting and building in a hostile environment. Some games combine both.
Is COLONIZED a space sim or a space survival game?
COLONIZED is a space survival MMORPG with a realistic space simulation as one of its pillars. The survival side is in the development build; ship flight, landing and multi-crew are in development.
Can a game be both a space sim and a survival game?
Yes. They overlap where the ship is also a home, where planets have a surface you can walk on and where resources have to be moved between places. The balance between the two is what differs.
Which should I choose, space survival or space sim?
Choose a space sim if what you enjoy is mastering a ship. Choose space survival if you want to manage needs, build and settle. If you want both, look for a game that states how it balances them.
