How to Start in a Survival MMO: Your First Hours, Step by Step, and the Mistakes to Skip
The first hours of a survival MMO decide whether you stay. A step-by-step plan for new players: read the rules, learn the needs, build small, find a group, and avoid the six mistakes that end most first sessions.

In short
- Start small: learn the needs, build a minimal shelter, craft the basics and find a group before you invest in anything large.
- Read the rules before you play: wipes, conflict model and what is saved on the server. They decide how much to invest.
- Six mistakes end most first sessions: ignoring needs, building too big, going far too early, solo-grinding, skipping the rules and picking a side or place without thinking.
- COLONIZED is not playable yet. Its first closed alpha wave is planned for winter 2026-2027; the build has five needs, ninety recipes, base building and a permanent choice of side.
The first hours of a survival MMO decide whether you stay. The genre is generous to people who learn its rhythm and brutal to people who skip it. This guide gives you a step-by-step plan for your first sessions, the six mistakes that end most of them and a short look at what a new player will meet in COLONIZED, a space survival MMORPG for PC. COLONIZED is not playable yet: applications for the closed alpha are open, and the first wave is planned for winter 2026-2027. If you are still choosing a game, the 2026 checklist will help.
Before you play: read three things
- The wipe policy. Will progress be reset, and with what notice? It tells you how much to invest.
- The conflict model. Can other players attack you? If so, what protects a base when you are offline? See co-op, PvE and PvP in survival games.
- What is saved on a server. Character, inventory and builds should be. If they are not, adjust your expectations.
Your first hours, step by step
- Find your needs. Open the status screen and see what drops, how fast and what refills it. Needs are the clock the game runs on.
- Gather the basics. Start with whatever is close and can be done by hand. Do not chase rare materials.
- Craft your first tools. A tool that makes the next task faster pays back immediately.
- Make a small, safe place. A minimum shelter near resources, with somewhere to log out. It is a base camp, not a project.
- Learn how building works. If structures need support, find out now, with something cheap.
- Find a group. In an MMO, a group makes most tasks faster and safer. A community channel is a good place to start.
- Expand in rings. Explore a little further each session and come back.
Six mistakes that end first sessions
| Mistake | What happens | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Ignoring needs | You die or stall for a reason you could have seen | Check needs on a schedule |
| Building too big | A large base you cannot protect or finish | Start with the smallest thing that works |
| Going far too early | You lose everything a long way from help | Explore in rings from a safe point |
| Solo-grinding | Hours of work that a group would finish faster | Find people early |
| Skipping the rules | A wipe or an attack takes you by surprise | Read the policy and the conflict model |
| Choosing blindly | A one-time choice you regret | Read what a choice implies, then decide |
A note on one-time choices
Some games ask for a decision that cannot be undone: a side, a class or a home world. Treat it as a commitment, ask your group before you decide and read what it affects. It is better to spend twenty minutes reading than twenty hours regretting.
A first-week schedule
| Session | Goal |
|---|---|
| 1 | Read the rules, learn the needs, craft basic tools, make a small shelter |
| 2 | Explore one ring around your shelter; map what is nearby |
| 3 | Find a group; join a community channel; ask what they are doing |
| 4 | Upgrade your tools and make your first real improvement to the shelter |
| 5 | Try a short expedition with your group, with a plan to come back |
| 6 | Review what went wrong; fix the weakest point of your base |
| 7 | Choose the next goal together: a bigger base, a new place, a new tool |
Two or three hours per session is plenty. The schedule matters less than the habit: one clear goal per session and one lesson noted at the end.
What a new player will meet in COLONIZED
COLONIZED is built as a space survival MMORPG, and its development build has what a new player would use:
- Five needs: health, hydration, nutrition, temperature and stamina, plus the vacuum outside the atmosphere.
- Ninety crafting recipes, made by hand, at the workbench, the fabricator and the furnace.
- Base building piece by piece; pull a support and whatever is left hanging comes down.
- Colonies for groups, which share beds and respawn points.
- A permanent choice of side, the Zenith or the Nadir, made once. Read the Zenith and the Nadir before you pick, and see the five global guilds for the neutral side.
- First- and third-person combat against alien fauna and AI-driven human enemies.
Resource gathering, ship flight, a player economy and the Compis companion drones are in development. The closed alpha has its own rules, covered in what to expect from a closed alpha, and its terms are published at the alpha terms. To understand the genre first, start with what a survival MMO is.
If you only remember three things
Learn your needs before you do anything else, because they set the clock. Keep your first base small enough to finish in one session. Find a group in the first week, because the genre is built for people who play together. Everything else in this guide is a way of doing those three things well, and the rest of the game will teach you at its own pace.
Most of all, give yourself permission to be slow. Survival MMOs reward patience in the first week and punish haste, and the players who last are rarely the ones who rushed.
