Who is she?
She is the colonel who leads The Vanguard, the military guild, one of the five Guilds that take no side. She is 71. In Year 1 she was joint military police on the bridge of the Arca Aurora, back when “joint” still meant something. Since then she has treated her neutrality as an order she refuses to disobey.
She hardly ever smiles. Her guild sells security to whoever pays, and its checkpoints annoy everyone equally. She counts that as a virtue: “If I annoy everyone equally, I’m not playing favourites: I’m doing my job.”
How do you recognise her?
- Very short grey hair and a straight back, with a face that seems made for expressing nothing.
- She never sits down inside El Bastión. She stays on her feet, beside an empty chair.
- She knows the name of every recruit she has lost, Zenith or Nadir.
- She speaks without ornament, like someone giving a report.
Where can she be found?
At El Bastión, The Vanguard’s seat in La Cicatriz. It was built on the remains of the Arca’s bridge, and it is the only Guild seat with an armed garrison day and night.
In the bridge’s old shuttle hangar there is a wall with 412 names. Every year, on the day the Arca fell, Ostrach reads them aloud: the sign at the entrance says so. That day the Cuarenta Días de Fuego began, the forty days after the crash.
Where does she appear in the Crónica?
She appears in chapter 6, “The Wall”, and returns in the third part of Book I of the Crónica de Aurin.
This entry gives nothing away: it only tells what is known about her when she is introduced.
