Who is he?
He is a pirate of the Cementerio de Aura, the band of wreckage left by the war of Year 1. The Cementerio pirates are void scavengers: they strip wrecks and raid cargo, and they belong to no side. El Notario is their best-known named chief. He is a character created for the Crónica de Aurin, the novel of the universe.
Nobody knows his name, and he has never asked anyone theirs. He is called the Notary because everything he steals, he writes down, and everything he writes down, he collects.
How do you recognise him?
- Three red stripes hand-painted on his helmet, like all of his crew. It is the mark of the Cementerio pirates.
- A black-covered notebook under his arm. That is where his receipts come from.
- He talks like someone reading out minutes: polite and unhurried. He ends his announcements with two words: “So noted.”
- He listens to every radio band, as a trade, the way a baker smells the oven.
- He flies the Conforme, a Revenant. It is a pre-war military hull, bought three times and stolen twice. It has been modified so often that nothing standard is left on it.
What does he say?
- “Leave the ore on the ground and your boots on.”
- “You’ll get the ship back.” And, after a second: “Maybe.”
- “Sleepers don’t sell. Cores do.”
This is what one of his receipts looks like:
RECEIVED IN GOOD ORDER from the patrol of The Vanguard, Cementerio de Aura, Year 47 E.A., day 221: one (1) padded transport crate, contents of Flota origin, unopened.
The ship is returned.
Signed: El Notario
Where can he be found?
In the Cementerio de Aura. There he closes his deals aboard the broken freighter where everyone meets. Inside, people talk with no weapons in their hands. If you see three red stripes on a helmet in the Cementerio, they are his people.
Where does he appear in the Crónica?
He appears in the prologue, “Holding”, and returns in chapter 3, “Received”.
This entry gives nothing away: it only tells what is known about him when he is introduced.
