Resource and loot guide

En quelques mots

A field guide to the materials of the Aurin system: what each one is and where to find it. It covers the five basic ores, the materials only one world gives, what animals leave behind and the relics that can’t be mined.

Metal doesn’t pick sides. Neither do I. I only pick who pays on time.

How are materials classed?

Aurin’s materials are sorted into five Grades, from I to V:

Grade Name What it means
I Raw Comes from anywhere.
II Refined Has been through a workbench or a furnace.
III Rare Found on a single world only.
IV Exotic Comes from high-risk zones or from hunting a particular animal.
V Unique Can’t be mined: it comes from a mission or an event.

On top of its grade, each batch has its own quality, from crude to flawless.

What is used to extract it?

Almost everything comes out with the ProtoGun, the hand tool. It has the extractor fitted as standard, the part that pulls the material free. The first thing a colonist learns with one in hand is a rule: three fingers below the vein.

The beam, the tool’s ray, changes with the material:

  • Hard rock needs the dense cutting beam.
  • Fragile material needs a soft beam.

Three materials are volatile: they don’t last long away from where they formed.

Volatile material How long it lasts away from where it formed
Cristal Umbrío about 25 minutes
Núcleo de Piroclasto 40 minutes
Live scrap (a variant of Chatarra de Aura) 60 minutes

Where are the five ores?

An ore is a rock that metal is extracted from. Aurin has five:

Ore Where it is richest What it is for
Technalite Kaldrek, the cold planet, and Kharsis, the arid planet. On Kharsis it sits in the Garganta de Sil, a system of canyons. Also on Ithera, the temperate planet, and on the asteroid Ashkar. Ingots, screws, ammunition and the ProtoGun itself.
Metazinc Kaldrek. On Ithera, in the walls of Cañón Espina. On Ormek, the first planet, in the crust of Las Calderas (basins of very salty water), from dusk to dawn. Weapon frames.
Neolith Kaldrek. On Ithera, in the druses (rock hollows lined with crystals) that floods expose in the Espejos de Rocío, a wetland. Ammunition, rockets and grenades. Also the mortar of the Flota Aura, the settlers’ fleet: it is a sealant.
Vibrosteel Kaldrek, at El Yunque, a massif, and Kharsis. On Ithera, in Cañón Espina’s rich pocket. Screws, together with technalite. It is the bottleneck of everything.
Flux Kaldrek, in the Campo de Fumarolas Perpetuas (vents that give off gas), Kharsis and Ashkar. Ammunition propellant.

Vibrosteel has a signature: a trace that can be picked up from far away. If one colonist can detect it, so can anyone. That is why it draws scavengers, unlicensed looters.

Which worlds are rich and which are not?

  • Kaldrek is the most fertile body in the system. It has all five ores, in abundance. And it is contested.
  • Ithera has them all, common rather than rich. It is where newcomers start out. There the risk isn’t other colonists: it is the fauna.
  • Cinera, Ormek’s black moon, has not a gram of metal.
  • Tirane, a moon of Ithera, is a sanctuary by custom: nothing is extracted there.

Which materials does only one world give?

Material Where What to know
Vitrarena The dunes of Kharsis, after a dry storm. Glass tubes left by lightning. It needs a soft beam, or it crumbles.
Resina Fósil de Kharsis Kharsis’s fossil mesas and basins. Honey-coloured nodules. It is not the Ámbar Licuado from the three wells of the Fosa Ámbar, a crater on Kharsis: that belongs to whoever holds the crater.
Carbonáceo de Cinera Cinera, at El Tizón. The only natural source of polymer: all other polymer is manufactured. It is worked in the dark.
Núcleo de Piroclasto Only Kaldrek’s active fissures. The fuel cell of ships. It needs an insulated container: it lasts forty minutes.
Cristal Umbrío Pure in the Anillos de Kaldrek; impure on Kaldrek’s surface. The only thing left of Mornane that still shines; Mornane is the dead moon whose remains form the rings. Getting it out takes the Field Stabiliser.
Chatarra de Aura The Cementerio de Aura, the rings and Renvar. It is salvage, what can be recovered from broken ships. It breaks down into metazinc, vibrosteel and screws.

What do animals and machines leave?

The Aurin bestiary records four creatures, and all of them leave something useful:

  • the Ombrask, a giant predator;
  • the Rolvak, an armoured grazer that lives in herds;
  • the Lumbro, an armoured ball that never attacks;
  • the sentinels, Flota Aura machines that nobody rescued.
Material From Grade What it is for
Espina de Rolvak Rolvak III Hunters’ weapons, venom and the Suero de Adrenalina Quitinosa.
Placa Quitinosa de Ombrask Ombrask IV The Placas de Caparazón, armour that resists knockback.
Glándula Bioluminiscente de Lumbro Lumbro; preferably animals already dead IV High-level medicine and a sedative that doesn’t kill.
Núcleo Motriz de Centinela sentinels IV The Neural Extract, for assisted sights and ship sensors.
Colmillo de Nido Rolvak nests — Exclusive material from the “El Nido Oculto” hunt.
Piel de Alfa Curada the Alfa, if one person brings it down alone V Elemental-resistance armour.

The Alfa is the Ombrask that Apex Syndicate, the Hunters’ Guild, marks for one of its hunts.

Almost every kill gives meat, and most give fat too. The Lumbro gives hardly any meat and no fat. Raw meat costs you health. Fat seals joints and warms Kaldrek’s stews.

What can’t be mined?

Some things come out of no vein at all:

  • The Fragmento de Casco del Arca Aurora comes from the deep missions in the core of La Cicatriz. La Cicatriz is the furrow the Arca Aurora, a Flota Aura ship, tore open when it crashed on Ithera.
  • The Núcleo de Navegación Aura comes from the “Caja Negra” mission chain of the Pathfinders, the Exploration Guild.
  • The Reliquia de Solmera is earned on the anniversary of the war of Year 1, the civil war that split the Flota Aura. Solmera is the galaxy the settlers came from.
  • An auxiliary core is the part of a compi that thinks; a compi is the sphere that floats behind a settler’s shoulder. It can only be had through each compi’s missions: never from a downed sentinel.
