The Zenith

Em poucas palavras

The Zenith are one of the two factions contesting the Aurin system, rivals of the Nadir. They believe in order, heavy industry and improving the body, and in hierarchy as the shield against chaos. Their motto is ‘La luz se gana’ (light is earned), and their home is the station El Pináculo.

The universe is a formless canvas awaiting our will. Stagnation is the true death.

Who are they?

The Zenith are one of the two factions of the Aurin system, where the settlers live. Their formal name is La Cátedra de los Arquitectos, and their motto “La luz se gana”: light is earned.

They came out of the Flota Aura, the fleet that brought the settlers from Solmera, their home galaxy. In the war of Year 1 the fleet split in two: the Zenith and their rivals, the Nadir.

Their home is El Pináculo, a station near the planet Ithera. Every recruit chooses a house aboard the Arca Custodia, the neutral ship that registers settlers, after reading each house’s enlistment record. The Zenith one closes like this:

“Order, energy and heavy industry. The Zenith believe the colony survives if someone keeps the light on, and that this someone has the right to decide who uses it.”

What do they believe?

To the Zenith, the fall of Solmera was a lesson to be corrected. They swore never again to depend on a single system or a single generation of technology. They believe three things:

  • Aurin is raw material, not a sanctuary.
  • The body can be improved. Fatigue and disease are engineering defects.
  • Hierarchy protects against the chaos that destroyed Solmera.

So they exploit hard and remake worlds to suit themselves (aggressive terraforming). They also alter the genes of volunteer settlers, and sometimes of settlers who were not quite volunteers.

They are not villains. They lost a home and swore, in complete sincerity, to be ready next time, whatever it cost. The bill has started to come out of their empathy.

Who is in charge?

After the war of Year 1 they created a high command: the Cátedra de Ascensión, half scientific council, half military junta. Its members are former chief engineers, fleet officers and bioengineers from the Proyecto Aura. Its decrees are called Axioms. Beneath it are:

  • The Arquitectos, their most senior scientists. They design the most advanced blueprints. At El Pináculo they control the MMU, the shared manufacturing technology.
  • The Guardia Vertical, the military and police arm. It calls its training officers Archons.
  • The Ascendidos, settlers who traded cybernetic or genetic enhancement for social rank. They wear their implants openly.

Where are they, and what do they hold?

El Pináculo watches Ithera from the L4 point of its orbit, ahead of the planet. It is anchored on Delvar, a rock that shares Ithera’s orbit. Their record credits them with the Fundición Alta, the Catapulta de Salto (the station’s jump service) and El Pináculo. They are also on:

  • Ormek, the planet closest to Aurin. The Registro Aura, the system’s first catalogue, marked it as forbidden, and the Zenith went down anyway. Under the clouds they found air and raised the Colector Solar Prima, which powers half the system.
  • Pyra, Ormek’s moon, home to their forge.
  • Kharsis, the arid mining planet, which they dominate.
  • Kravane, a moon of Kharsis, with the Fundición Alta.
  • Kaldrek, the cold planet and war front, where they hold the Bastión Ígneo, their forward base.
  • Melvara, Ithera’s large moon, with the Observatorio Cumbre.

They want the most valuable deposits, above all on Kaldrek, and a new generation of jump engines. With it they hope to outdo Solmera in everything Solmera never managed.

How do they live?

  • Values. “Sentimental” is an insult.
  • Holiday. The Día del Primer Salto, the anniversary of the departure from Solmera. There are parades of machinery, and that year’s Ascendidos have their implants “upgraded” in public.
  • Colours. Polished white, lacquered black and gold, lit in cold cyan.
  • Kit. Spotless, because it gets cleaned.

How do the ranks work?

Both houses share five faction ranks, with titles of their own (see reputation). In the Cátedra, rank is earned through measurable results: production, kills and faction missions. Never through seniority.

Rank Title in the Cátedra
Recluta Recluta Vertical: escorted by the Guardia inside the station
Operativo Iniciado de la Cátedra: has sworn the First Axiom
Veterano Ascendido Menor: has begun cybernetic enhancement
Comandante Arquitecto Adjunto: a voice, but no vote, in technical sessions
Leyenda Héroe de la Cátedra: named on the Día del Primer Salto

From Veterano upwards the climb shows: each rank adds an implant, more visible and more golden.

How do they see others?

They call the Nadir “the ones who stood watching their sun go out because they were afraid to touch the switch”. Ithera, the planet without armies, strikes them as a sentimental oddity. The Armisticio de Ithera, the treaty that ended the war, is to them a temporary arrangement.

Where are the cracks?

Not everyone obeys equally:

  • Commander Ysolde Kray signs the Kaldrek quotas with misgivings.
  • The odd Arquitecto passes data to the wrong people.
  • Leaked Axioms circulate that speed up extraction, even at the risk of collapsing an entire deposit.

One of them reached the Refinería Yermo, on Kharsis.
