Why places are limited: the capacity of a development server

Places in the closed alpha are limited because the test runs on a development server, not a production one. How the number of simultaneous players turns into a number of places, why the first wave is the smallest and what changes in the closed beta.

In short

  • The closed alpha runs on a development server, which holds a limited number of players at once. That limit, not a marketing choice, decides how many places each wave has.
  • Places are not the same as simultaneous players: not every tester is connected at the same time. The team estimates the share online at the busiest hour and corrects it with real measurements.
  • That is why the first wave is the smallest. It is also why creators are admitted in turns and applying does not guarantee a place.
  • The closed beta is planned for 2027, with more testers and a dedicated server. Dates and places per wave have not been announced.

Places in the COLONIZED closed alpha are limited because the test runs on a development server. A development server is built to find problems, not to host a crowd, and it holds a limited number of players at the same time. The team opens places in small waves, measures what happens and decides the next batch. The first waves are planned for winter 2026-2027.

The closed beta is planned for 2027, with more testers and a dedicated server. Until then, capacity is the hard limit.

From server capacity to places

A place is not the same as a connected player. Testers log in at different times, so only part of them are online at once. The team works with a simple relation:

places = players the server holds at once ÷ share of testers online at the busiest hour

An illustration with made-up figures, not ours: if a server holds 40 players at once and one tester in four is online at the busiest hour, it supports 160 places. If testers play more than expected, the same server supports fewer.

Nobody knows the real share before the test. So the first wave measures it, and the next wave is sized with what it showed. The plan for that wave is in the wave 0 diary.

What this changes for you

  • The first wave is the smallest. It is a measurement as much as a test.
  • Applying does not guarantee a place. Your order of arrival and your referrals help, and the team also balances hardware, regions, languages and playstyles. The routes are in how to get a place.
  • Creators are admitted in turns. Each one uses several places in a wave, their own plus the codes they hand out, so the creators programme activates them wave by wave.
  • Dates and numbers are not announced. We will publish them on this site and on Discord when they exist.

A wave that is too large would cost the test its purpose, because a saturated server hides the problems the team came to find. Small waves are the careful way. How a wave runs is explained in what a Steam Playtest is, and you can apply for the closed alpha now.

Questions and answers

Why are there so few places in the COLONIZED closed alpha?

Because the closed alpha runs on a development server, which holds a limited number of players at once. The team opens places in small waves, measures how the server behaves and then decides the next batch.

How does the team decide how many places a wave has?

From the number of players the server can hold at once and the share of testers expected to be connected at the busiest hour. The estimate is corrected with real measurements from the first waves.

Will there be more places later?

The plan is a closed beta in 2027 with more testers and a dedicated server. Dates and the number of places have not been announced.

Why are creators admitted in turns?

Because each creator uses several places in a wave: their own plus the codes they give to their audience. With limited capacity, the team activates creators in turns, wave by wave.

Does applying early guarantee a place?

No. Your order of arrival and your referrals help, but the team also balances hardware, regions, languages and playstyles, and capacity is limited.
